Some Wollongong car loan reviews

What our clients say about us.

We proudly help hundreds of Wollongong locals with their car loan each year. Here's what people are saying about us.

  • What is the difference between a secured and unsecured car loan?

A secured car loan uses the vehicle as security and carries a noticeably lower interest rate. An unsecured loan is not tied to the car, costs more, but has fewer restrictions on what you can buy.

    Secured car loans

Because the lender has an asset to fall back on, rates are lower and approval limits higher. The lender registers an interest over the car, and it can be repossessed if the loan is not repaid.

    Unsecured car loans

Rates are higher, but this is often the only option for older vehicles, heavily modified cars, or private sales a secured lender will not touch. In some cases a personal loan is the better fit.

Vehicle age is the deciding factor

Most lenders will secure a loan against a car up to a set age at the end of the loan term. Beyond that they move you to unsecured pricing. If the vehicle is for business use, asset finance usually beats a consumer car loan on both rate and tax treatment.

  • Can I get a car loan if I am self employed in Wollongong?

Yes. Self employed borrowers in Wollongong have several options, including full documentation, low documentation and asset backed lending.

    Full documentation

Uses your last one or two years of tax returns and financial statements. Delivers the sharpest rates.

    Low documentation

Assesses you on ABN and GST registration history, business bank statements or a declaration of income. Suits business owners whose taxable income does not reflect their real cash flow. See our page on low doc loans in Wollongong, which covers a lot of the sole trader tradies and contractors working locally.

    Buying for business use

Asset finance products such as a chattel mortgage may suit better than a consumer car loan, with different GST and depreciation treatment. Some lenders approve asset backed applicants, meaning those who own property, with very limited financial information.

The right product depends on how long you have held your ABN, whether you are GST registered, and how the vehicle will be used. If a home loan is also on the horizon, our self employed home loans page is worth reading first.

  • Is dealer finance better than a broker arranged car loan?

Usually not, once fees and the comparison rate are included. Dealer finance is convenient, but a broker arranged loan lets you compare across a wide lender panel and walk in with approval already sorted.

    What dealer finance can hide

Establishment fees, add on products such as extended warranties and insurances, and a rate marked up from the lender's base offer. A dealer also typically works with one or a small number of financiers, so you are seeing their panel rather than the market.

    Where a broker helps

Arranging approval before you walk into the dealership turns you into a cash equivalent buyer, which usually strengthens your position on the drive away price. The same logic applies across lending generally, as we cover in mortgage broker versus bank.

    Our advice

Get the dealer's best offer in writing, then let us test it against the market. Occasionally a manufacturer runs a genuinely sharp promotional rate on a specific model. If theirs is better, take it.

  • How does a balloon payment work and should I use one?

A balloon is a lump sum left owing at the end of the loan term. It lowers your monthly repayment but means you pay more interest overall, so it suits businesses managing cash flow rather than private buyers keeping a car long term.

    How it works

Setting a balloon means you only pay down part of the loan balance during the term. At the end you either pay it out in cash, refinance it into a new loan, or sell or trade the vehicle and use the proceeds to clear it.

    The risk

Depreciation. If the car is worth less than the balloon when the term ends, you cover the shortfall. That risk is higher on vehicles that depreciate quickly and lower on utes and work vehicles that hold value well.

For business vehicles, the equivalent structure under asset finance is called a residual, and the tax treatment differs. We model both scenarios, with and without a balloon, so you can see the real difference in total cost before deciding.
